WHAT IS COFFEE CHAFF?
Coffee chaff is a lightweight skin or husk that blows of green coffee beans during the roasting process.
For many coffee companies chaff is a pain in the neck - goes on fire easily, flies around all over the place, gets into everything.
WHY DID YOU GET STARTED?
After a globe-trotting career in agricultural commodities, James Curren was inspired to start a fair trade organic coffee company. After seeing the waste generated by the coffee roasting business, he was inspired to start to turn some of those waste streams into useful consumer products.
HOW DID THE FERTILIZER GET MADE?
After noticing how much coffee chaff was being thrown away after roasting, James sent a chaff sample to the for analysis to understand what was in the stuff. Turns out, chaff is a good source of natural nitrogen. Nitrogen is a basic element needed for plants to grow successfully and is one of 3 major components in plant fertilizers commonly referred to as NPK. James collaborated with the Agricultural Utilization Research institute (AURI) to develop the formula for JavaCycle's All-Purpose Fertilizer to be optimal for the most commonly grown plants, fruits and vegetables.
